SMARTNet December Newsletter

December is here and the holiday season is upon us. We want to take this time to wish you and yours a wonderful holiday and to update you on what SMARTNet Alliance has been up to this past month. Just like St. Nick up in the North Pole, we have been hard at work supporting Ottawa’s sustainable initiatives and local entrepreneurs.
It’s been a busy month for entrepreneurial events across Ottawa and SMARTNet Alliance has been in attendance for many. On Tuesday November 27th the Ottawa chapter of the Entrepreneurs Organization held their annual Global Student Entrepreneur Awards at Bayview Yards. Here, three student lead businesses pitched their business for a chance to compete in the national awards final which will happen in January at the Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC.

Congratulations to the team at The Growcer for the win. The Growcer manufactures modular plug-and-play hydroponic systems to enable food production in remote communities and operations. Their flagship: Arctic Growing System IV is built within retrofitted insulated shipping containers and can produce in excess of 4 tonnes of produce annually in temperatures as cold as -52°C. We know they will represent Ottawa well in the Canada wide awards competition early next year.

Next up, we attended Algonquin College’s RE/ACTION Day at the new DARE Districtwithin the college. RE/ACTION highlights leading-edge applied research done in collaboration with local industry, institutional and community partners, providing a glimpse into the future of technology and the current state of innovation. Over sixty student lead teams and future entrepreneurs presented their projects and inspired the next generation of innovators. Congratulations to all those involved in such a successful day.
Finally, we dropped in at Invest Ottawa’s Pre Accelerator Pitch Finale where Ottawa's emerging tech entrepreneurs battled in front of a panel of judges, their peers and tech startup enthusiasts. The winning company was awarded one-on-one mentor hours with leading experts/specialists and six months free office space at Bayview Yards. Congratulations to the team at Nurtured Life for winning both the Best Pitch Award and the Crowd Favorite Award. Kudos to Invest Ottawa and all the start-ups for their dedication and entrepreneurial spirit.
We can't wait for 2019 to continue in helping to build the sustainable economy in Ottawa and beyond. There are some exciting events to kick off a sustainable new year in January. Be sure to check out the SMARTNet Sustainable Events Spotlight below to find out more.
SMARTNet Year in Review

This was another year of growth and development at SMARTNet Alliance, where staff and stakeholders worked together to help advance the transition to Canada’s sustainable economy. Through events such as Green Energy Doors OpenOld Home Earth Day, the monthly Green Drinks series, and various member events we were able to grow awareness around sustainability and build demand in several key sectors. We continue to work towards our ultimate goal of scaling up the sustainable economy and building capacity for future projects and endeavors. By working with like minded businesses and organizations, we were able to advance our shared principles and despite setbacks on the political landscape, SMARTNet Alliance has lead the way as a green economy steward in and around the Ottawa area.

We have continued to develop the sustainable community in other regions such as the Durham region and have plans to grow the Alliance in more locations in 2019 with events such as Green Drinks. Our customized payroll system has undergone a major retrofit and will be ready to be rolled out to small and medium businesses in 2019. We sponsored the SMARTpreneur Award which was presented at the Powering Prosperity Award Night hosted by the Ontario Sustainable Energy Association. Warren Abar, Founder and President of iSolara Solar Power was presented with the Award.  Congratulations to Warren and all the nominees.

In May, we moved into our new offices at WorkAway Offices, a co-sharing space located at 900 Lady Ellen Place in Ottawa - doesn’t that sound just so fancy!  It’s a great location with boardrooms, a member’s area and offices to meet every need. All in all a very exciting year!

We want to wish you an incredible holiday season with your family, friends and we are excited to continue our efforts in 2019 to scale up, build capacity and ultimately shift Canada’s economy to a more robust and sustainable one.

Happy Holidays from SmartNet Alliance,

Joe, Raymonde & Nick

Congratulations to our member Lagois Design Build Renovate for winning the Renovator of the Year Award at the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association's Annual Housing Design Awards this past October. Those three companies were also the finalists for the same category at the Ontario Home Builders’ Association Awards of Distinction earlier in the year. We are so proud of Herb Lagois and his whole team at Lagois Design Build Renovate for blazing a trail of environmentally friendly design and renovations.
