Frequently Asked Questions
What are the membership fees or dues?
There are no fees or dues beyond your own sweat equity, drive, desire, and the discipline to make things happen.
Who can become a member?
While anyone who wants to start their own business, or who already has a small business can join, we tend to attract skilled workers from all trades who want to branch out on their own.
Who are typical members?
At the moment, because of our alliance with the CUSW, most of our members are skilled workers from the energy sector. Membership is open to anyone who wants to take advantage of the opportunities that self-employment offers.
Will you provide funding for my new business?
Most start-ups are either self-funded or angel-funded by friends and family. There may be situations where we will be able to connect you with venture capitalists or individuals who may be interested in providing funding support for a viable business opportunity. Your chances of getting funding are greatly enhanced by a well thought-out and properly documented business plan.
Do you provide offices and secretarial support for new companies?
The Canadian Union of Skilled Workers has provided office space that we call "The Nexus Room" and is available for use by Members. It's located in Mississauga and you must arrange access in advance if you wish to use it in the evenings or weekends.
We offer a full range of secretarial support services on a fee-for service basis. We have agreements with providers across the country. We will work to find people in your community who will meet your needs.
How can you help me get started?
There are several things that we can do to assist you. First of all, check out the Resource section of this site.
Starting a new venture can be a daunting experience. The Alliance's business coach/mentor can assist you to get through the first steps of setting up your business.
What can the Alliance do to help an already existing business?
There are a number of things. First, there is access to an experienced business mentor who can provide an unbiased opinion as to where your business is and provide guidance to help you get it to where you want it to be.
Second, we may be able to match you up with another member whose service offerings complement yours and enable the combined firms to take on jobs that each firm would not be able to do alone.
Third, we actively look for potential opportunities and encourage members to proactively seek new business that will allow them to grow and prosper.
Why does the Alliance focus on the energy sector?
The Alliance recognizes that North America lags the rest of the world in the development of renewable and sustainable energy and sees this as an incredible opportunity to position skilled workers and technically savvy companies to get ahead of the wave that is coming.
What other services does the Alliance provide?
In addition to the services outlined in the Resources section, we are constantly on the look-out for appropriate resources, tools, and opportunities to pass along to members in an effort to keep members in the know and ahead of the game.
